![]() Ideal for colder temps, obviously, the Thermo Hoodie makes for a great base layer but can be worn as a main piece as well. I’ve probably worn this polartec equipped hooded jersey more than any other piece gear I own. WHY WE LIKE IT: The Defend Thermo Hoodie is the single most important and by favorite piece of kit in my gear bag. A convenient and secure stash pocket at the hip means you can rip with your stuff held in place, no matter how rowdy you get. This hoodie goes the extra mile with abrasion-resistant, wind-blocking fabric that will add to the toasty times as you hit that chilly downhill.īest of all, the form-fitting hood fits easily under your helmet to provide that next-level defense against the cold as you pedal through the rough stuff. The Defend Thermo Hoodie has more than warmth on its mind, with breathable insulation that’ll wick away sweat while keeping you snug and protecting you from the cold. You can’t put a price on safety, but the Forefront is reasonably priced for the features it offers at $240usd. You can get the Forefront in nearly any color and the straps are highly adjustable to fit nearly any head shape. It is comfortable, has an adjustable visor that is just long enough to keep the sun out of your eyes, and holds eyewear securely in the provided channels. After taking a few helmet crushing slams, the Forefront has kept me from major head injury in part thanks to the koroyd technology and MIPS liner. WHY WE LIKE IT: I cannot recommend a helmet more than the Forefront 2 MIPS. Following this evolution in design, the Smith Forefront 2 MIPS Helmet builds on the success of the original with increased aerodynamics, heightened protection, and 20 airy-cool vens in a sleek, attractive lid for trail and all-mountain disciplines. Mountain biking protective gear is constantly being re-engineered to be lighter, stronger, and sleeker, seeing demanding trail and all-mountain riders want more comfortable helmets without sacrificing good looks. Don’t expect it to hang with hard shell coverage but the best pad is one you can always wear. It has just enough protection to shrug off falls on the trail but is low profile enough to fit under every short or pant. You can wear it all day without chafing or falling down your leg. WHY WE LIKE IT: This is my go-to daily knee guard. There’s also silicone printing in key areas of the sleeve, so your pads stay where they belong and not around your ankles. ![]() ![]() The 3D molded gel impact pad is perforated to improve cooling and moisture-wicking airflow, and it’s stuck to a sleeve made of Airmesh and Moisture Cool fabrics to keep the undersides of your knees dry. Designed to split the difference between hard-shell and barely-there pads, the Airflex Pro uses low-profile soft-shell foam to protect the front, top, and sides of your knees without restricting your pedaling prowess. Strap into the Leatt Airflex Pro Knee Guard before you head out to crush (or crash) the next local enduro. These bone conduction headphones by Aftershokz allow me to listen to music with an acceptable if not great quality, but crucially still hear the trail and not interrupt the peace for others. For riders who are as music-obsessed as I am they could be a game changer – I’d resorted to all sorts of rubbish solutions like playing music out of a phone speaker tucked into my helmet strap, or a Bluetooth speaker in a backpack, but neither gave a good compromise of quality and usability without ruining other peoples rides. WHY WE LIKE IT: Give the gift of music without compromising trail safety. They’ll sit just fine with an open-face helmet and glasses, and let you listen to music without disrupting your balance or timing or reducing awareness of your surroundings like an in-ear alternative can. The Openmove headphones are the entry level offering by Aftershokz, but still pack most of the features of their more expensive brothers. ![]() ![]() Transducers send vibrations through the cheekbones and deliver sound directly to the inner ear, bypassing the eardrum. Unlike traditional headphones that use speakers to transmit sound vibrations through the air, AfterShokz uses patented bone conduction technology. ![]()
